TED Talks have inspired, motivated, and have expanded my knowledge from people all around the world. This TED talk shows how technology can help those who are bed ridden. This ten minute video makes me believe that students that are sick or bed ridden can now participate in the regular classroom setting.
When my youngest brother was 8 years old, he broke his leg while playing football with my other three brothers. It was not the normal leg break, he had a spiral fracture of his femur. He was put in traction for 4 weeks and then went right into a body cast for another 6 weeks. He missed over 10 weeks of school. We had tutors come to the house to help my brother with his homework and to keep up on the skills that he was missing during the school day.
If that same situation would happened today, I would hope that the technology would be in place where my brother could have still been part of the classroom setting while laying on his back in the hospital. The use of webcams, online discussion boards, Google Docs, and online videos can allow students to learn from anywhere. These tools can provide distance learning for a student that is stuck in a hospital recovering from an injury or an illness. Just think of the possibilities....
