Checklist Vs Choice Boards

10/30/2017

What is the difference between a checklist and a choice board in a blended and personalized learning classroom?

The difference is simple. A checklist is something that you have to complete.  For example, think about when you are packing for a trip.  You make a list of all of the items that need to be packed as well as all of the chores that need to be complete before leaving the house.  That is a checklist.

A choice board are 5C's activities (creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and connectedness) that can be used to showcase understanding of the content.  For example, you are on vacation, you generate a list of activities that you would like to do while at the resort.  You don't have to complete all of the items on the list but rather you get to pick and choose which ones would work best for you.
Below are samples of a checklist and a choice board.

  • Students complete all activities on the list at his/her own pace, place, and path.
  • Student activities can be differentiated
  • Setting goals and working towards an activity is one way to get the students motivated to complete the items on the checklist

I loved the training that you gave to us (especially that you modeled what you were teaching so we could see where we were trying to get our classes). I also really like the checklists and choice board examples that you gave us! Do you by chance have the goal setting sheet examples anywhere that we could reference?

Thanks :)

Hello Peggy, thank you for the kind words. The goal sheets are located on the CyFair link that was posted on the agenda. I will send you the direct link to the site so you can grab a copy of the goal setting forms.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Marcia

Marcia, I like he real life analogies that you use so that the content makes sense. Great strategy to use with kids as well. Comparing the checklist to a grocery list or a travel list makes so much sense.

This is a very straight-forward explanation of the difference between terms. I appreciate that you include examples for teachers to use and make their own.

I agree~! The checklist works so that ALL can do ALL but the choice board allows for more flexibility of choice.

I completely agree. The checklist is very simple and to the point. I feel that this is beneficial to students because it self pace but it keeps them in a task oriented mindset.
