5 Reasons to Implement Blended Learning

Today’s global economy and the changing demands on the workforce require workers to be analytical, solve problems, creative and highly adaptable to change.  Educators cannot prepare students effectively for their futures through the ‘traditional” teaching model.  Schools and educators must change the way they instruct to prepare learners the changing landscape.

How can educators respond to the needs of learners to prepare them for their futures?

Blended learning strategies provides opportunities for educators to respond to the needs of our students and our society. For example, here are five reasons why we should implement blended learning in our schools.
1.  It is the way our kids learn.
Kids are coding through minecraft, producing their own videos and interacting with others online.  They are using #makerspaces to create and explore. When they want to learn how to do something, they go to YouTube to learn.  Our kids are learning in ways that we couldn’t have imagined and blended learning allows teachers to meet them where they are.

2.
Prepares learners for real life.
Technology is changing the way we work.  Routine tasks are now digitized.  Workers in today’s economy must be able to communicate properly through technology, work effectively in teams, create solutions to problems and think critically.  Blended learning allows time for collaboration among learners, opportunities to connect globally to other classrooms.

3.
Increases learner engagement.
When learners are interested in what they are learning, they stay engaged.  According to a Center for Digital Education study, over 70 percent of teachers employing blended learning for their classes saw improved enagement.  With the availability of digital tools, teachers can deliver instruction in different ways. Students learn through a variety of activities that meet their learning styles at their pace.

“The world doesn’t care what you know. What the world cares about is what you do with what you know.” - Tony Wagner

4.  Improves efficiency, feedback.
Blended learning allows teachers to maximize the time they have with learners.  Teachers have access to an abundance of resources. Teachers need to use these resources to analyze data on student learning. This process allows teachers to quickly assess student needs and to provide timely, effective feedback. Once this feedback occurs, students know exactly where they are in their learning.
With the implementation of digital content, teachers can assign adaptive technology assignments to learners to get immediate feedback while working closely with small groups or individual learners.  While a small group of learners are practicing skills through digital content, another small group of learners are applying what they learn by creating a product to show what they know.  In another part of the room, other learners are practicing skills independently while the teacher focuses on a small group to teach new content, re-teach content or provide feedback.
One teacher we work with was reluctant to try mini lessons with her high school Geometry class.  After encouragement and utilizing strategies we shared with her, she tried it.  After that class she said how much she loved meeting with each one of her 30 students because she’s never been able to do that through her traditional model of teaching.

5.
Makes learning fun and promotes student ownership.

Interactive learning activities, interest-based projects and game-based learning makes learning fun for learners.  Choosing where to learn, who to learn with, and how they learn gives learners ownership. Students can begin to track their own learning to be accountable for their own learning.

Good blog, In this COVID19 pandemic many students are struggling to continue their education. Blended learning courses provided by the colleges and universities are helping them very much.

I completely agree with these 5 reasons! Kids, not even adults, would be engaged sitting in rows listening to a teacher talk for hours and stare at a board. I have seen first hand how having a blended classroom creates an environment for learning and allows students to have ownership of that learning.

I believe in blended learning. I have seen it work. I think that it has a little bit of everything that is important in a classroom setting. Kids being able to create in a way that is meaningful to them allows for more engagement in the classroom. When I implemented it my students did not miss school unless they were really sick. Our attendance went up and our scores went up. Being able to meet with every student everyday in a small group is something that changed my scores because it was easy to assess where they were and what their needs are at that time. Feedback is much easier given when you meet with them everyday as well. My students always received daily feedback and they learned how to take that feedback and run with it! The use of technology and the way they communicate is used everyday and they start to use real life skills without even knowing they are doing so. Most importantly it is FUN! The students love it and feel comfortable to work how they want to with being able to collaborate with their peers.

Blended learning allows students and teachers to find more engaging ways to cover content. Students can get immediate feedback and teachers get immediate data back from digital content. Students do not learn in the same way or at the same pace. Blended learning allows teachers to differentiate activities and allows students to pick and choose.

Blended learning helps prepare students for the real world. It engages all students through a variety of activities and pace. It gives students immediate feedback and allows teachers to get immediate data through the digital content. Teachers see an increase in student engagement because they are learning about things they are interested in at their own pace. Blended learning also promotes student ownership by allowing them to choose where they learn, with who they learn, and how they learn.

Yes! Blended Learning helps to prepare students for the real world. By allowing students to engage themselves and others in studios that have real world connections, we are helping them to be future ready.

I loved so many things about this article and how it reinforced what we are already seeing in education. The reason I fell in love with blended learning is the increased engagement in the classroom because the student had choice and the improved efficiency because the teacher is able to focus on what the learner needs individually.

Teachers are competing with many high interest activities our students participate in and Blended Learning increases the learner engagement by meeting the needs of all learning styles.

Blended Learning is a wonderful model that increases student engagement with the content, their peers and with their teachers. The mini-lesson is a wonderful opportunity for students to ask questions that they would not ask in a whole group learning environment. The teacher also now has the time to engage in one-on-one conversations with their students that typically does not occur in a traditional model.

The first image resonated with me -- our learners are changing from the world we learned in. I like having information quick at my fingertips but need to be able to collaborate and team to get tasks done more efficiently. BL helps with all of those things and at a pace and path I need!

I really appreciate this list as it provides a great elevator speech for the why of Blended Learning. This is really how I would have preferred to be taught in school. As a teacher, the mini-lesson was always my favorite. You get to have such different interactions with your students and get to know them much better.

It is important for education to continue to evolve so that we can meet our students needs and help them meet their potential. Timely feedback is a challenge in all classrooms. Finding ways to measure student learning and reteach/review key content quickly ensures that students are prepared to move forward in their learning. Blended learning gives the teacher time to review their student data, adjust the mini lessons, and address student needs so that students can move forward in their learning.

Reason number 3: "increases learner engagement" is the one that resonates the most with me. A common frustration I hear from teacher is the feeling that it is getting harder and harder to get their students' attention. It makes the most sense to adjust the delivery and method of teaching than to continue to try and make the students change what is natural to them.
